    Description

All of the “home” sewing machines manufactured today use the familiar round bobbin, but it wasn’t always that way.
The very first sewing machines used a bullet-shaped bobbin case or “shuttle” that moved back and forth beside the needle. The bobbin case carried a small bobbin inside that looked like a miniature dumbbell (photo five), and it worked in just the same way as the shuttle of a loom, weaving its thread back and forth horizontally at the same time as the needle weaved its thread vertically. This simple technology worked so well that Singer manufactured one family of “shuttle-style” sewing machines (Models VS1, VS2, VS3, 27, 28, 127 and 128) from the 1880s until the 1960s.
This bobbin case, SIMANCO (“SInger MANufacturing COmpany”) part number 8301, originally came home from the Singer shop with one of Singer’s early “shuttle-style” machines. Although Singer made slight changes in the design of these things several times over the years, in our experience this older shuttle will work perfectly in any Singer Model 27, 28, 127 and 128 ever made. In fact, the stitches I made with it during my “test drive” (photos seven and eight) were done on a 1955 Singer 128K from my collection.
My husband and chief Singer mechanic, Jeff, removes the adjustment screw and the tension spring from every one of these things because 100 years of grease and dirt and bits of thread lurk beneath, making it difficult to properly adjust the tension (photo five). This bobbin case and its long bobbin have been thoroughly cleaned and we have provided photographs from every angle so you can see exactly what you’re getting. We hope it helps you to make lots of beautiful things.
We have owned and restored over 1000 antique and vintage Singer sewing machines and know quite a bit about them, so please ask if you have questions! We are happy to help you.
